I have started improving my blogging game by working on the technical end of things. This includes SEO, working with social media and digital marketing.
Languishing Sites
My biggest problem with all of my websites is that I was writing content for them--and no one was reading it. OK, I had a handful of loyal readers who were my friends, but not a wider general audience.
On top of that, I was barely using any kind of analytics or SEO. Yes, I had the various plugins installed and set up on my sites, but I was not really using them. What makes things worse is that I was paying for some of them, including the Yoast SEO Pro service. And that's a foul.
So what do I want out of all of this? Well, I want to get where more people actually read what I write. I'm not doing this for money, so it is just personal gratification. Anything. That I learn and teach myself will help with all of my sites--all 5 of them.
Renewed Focus on Blogging
How can I get there? Since I retired in December of 2022, I have a bit more time on my hands to learn about all of these technologies that support blogging (don't get me started on the subject of "having more time on my hands now that I'm retired." I'm busier now that ever before...)
I want to focus on the five sites, growing the readership and reach. Each of those sites is quite different, with different needs and audiences. I want to get back on track in understanding those audiences and figuring out how to write content that they will care about.
And that is the real thing I need to focus on: writing. I know I said I was writing content that few people were reading, but that really is the prize, not the technologies that support it. If you do not publish consistent, high quality content you will not be found on the Internet and then it is all a waste. The fancy technology helps you reach people, but you have to keep them wanting to come back once you do connect. To do that you need content.
What the Future Holds
So my future is three-fold: writing more content for all of the websites (and improving what I already have), but also improving my understanding and use of digital technologies like SEO, social media marketing, email marketing and analytics. On top of those two, I also need to get my butt organized and improve my workflow to be as efficient as possible.
Each of these technologies are interconnected to the content--you have work with your content to improve your SEO and get seen on Google, for example. Each of them is also a rabbit hole where you can spend a huge amount of time learning about things that are more art than science, too.
But you have to engage with all of those tools to get your content seen by any audience. And that is what I will be doing. As I produce more content for my sites, I will be learning about the tools and technologies and writing about what I learn here. I hope you all find it worthwhile!
